From Proto-Turkic *tạnu- (to know, get to know). Cognates with Azerbaijani tanımaq, Turkmen tanymak, Turkish tanımak, Uzbek tanimoq, Kazakh тану (tanu), Kyrgyz тануу (tanuu), Chuvash тынӑ (tynă, eyewitness).
