Persian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From تن (tan, present stem of تنیدن (tanidan, “to weave (a spider's web), to twist”)) + ـش (-eš).
It is not found with the current meaning in early 1900s dictionaries (Steingass, Dehkhoda, Hayyim). It might be a phono-semantic matching of French tension or some other European language.
Pronunciation
[edit]- (Iran, formal) IPA(key): [t̪ʰæ.néʃ]
