  1. board, plank, a long, wide and thin piece of any material, usually wood, for use in construction or furniture-making
  2. (medicine) splint, a rigid or flexible device used to keep in place, restrict motion in, and protect an injured body part
  3. (historical) tablet, any slab of clay, stone, wax, or wood used in antiquity and in the Middle Ages as a writing surface

  4. (architecture) panelling, wainscotting, the wooden panels with which a surface, especially an indoor wall, is covered
  5. sheet of fur, sewed and prepared for use in lining a garment, providing a neat inside finish and concealing interfacing

Etymology

From Middle Persian tʾhtk' (taxtag, tablet, plank, (chess) board), from tʾht' (taxt, throne) and the suffix -k' (-ag). Compare Old Armenian տախտակ (taxtak), Aghwan 𐔳𐔰𐕀𐕜𐔰𐕄 (daxṭaḳ), and Arabic تَخْتَج (taḵtaj), Middle Iranian borrowings.
