[edit]Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀩𑀧𑁆𑀨 (bappha), from Sanskrit वाष्प (vāṣpa, “tear”).[1] First attested in c. 1419 as Middle Hindi بھاپھہ (bhaphh /bhāph/) and later as بھاپ (bhap /bhāp/).[2]
