Etymology

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀩𑀧𑁆𑀨 (bappha), from Sanskrit वाष्प (vāṣpa, tear).[1] First attested in c. 1419 as Middle Hindi بھاپھہ (bhaphh /⁠bhāph⁠/) and later as بھاپ (bhap /⁠bhāp⁠/).[2]
