[edit]Ultimately from a development of Proto-Turkic *bas- (“to press”), the same root of باصمق (basmak). Compare Bashkir баҫҡыс (baśqıs), Kazakh басқыш (basqyş), Khakas пасхыс (pasxıs), Kyrgyz баскыч (baskıc), Tatar баскыч (baskıç) and Uzbek bosqich.
