From Middle Persian ʾngwl (angūr, grape), from Proto-Iranian *angaura- (vine, grape), probably a derivative of Proto-Iranian *Hangas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hángas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eng- (to curve, bend), referring to the curving nature of grapevines.[1]
