  1. to cause oneself to separate, to walk away, to disassociate, to detach from, to withdraw, to keep away
    • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 18:16:
      وَإِذِ اعْتَزَلْتُمُوهُمْ وَمَا يَعْبُدُونَ إِلَّا اللَّهَ فَأْوُوا إِلَى الْكَهْفِ
      Since you have distanced yourselves from them and what they worship besides Allah, take refuge in the cave.
