Etymology

Claimed in Lisan al-Arab to be derived from Arabic مشربة, described as a place where water comes to the surface (as one stretches one's neck to peer at something) such that it can be scooped up with bare hands without need of drawing it with a rope.

اِشْرَأَبَّ (išraʔabba) IVq (non-past يَشْرَئِبُّ (yašraʔibbu), verbal noun اِشْرِئْبَاب (išriʔbāb))

  1. to raise one's head (as when trying to reach or look at something) [with لِ (li) or إِلَى (ʔilā) ‘to someone/something’]
    Synonym: شَبَّ (šabba)
    اِشْرَأَبَّتْ بِعُنُقِهَا إِلَيَّ

    She raised her head to me.
