Etymology

[edit]

Paradoxically, it is not called in Turkish **eski dünya but yeni dünya / یڭی دنیا (a meaning also widespread in the Arabic يَنْكِي دُنْيَا (yangī dunyā) by the middle of the twentieth century). In إِسْكِدُنْيَا (ʔiskidunyā), the first half is in fact the Persian borrowing ازگیل / ezgil (medlar). And the second half also, دنیا / dünya (world) being a reinterpretation of دنگل (döngel, düngel, medlar), which is the same word blended with the stem of دونمك / dönmek (to turn around) based on the fruit’s round form.
