Etymology

Apparently calque of Classical Syriac ܐܪܝܐ ܕܓܘܡܐ (ʾaryā də-gūmā, “broomrape”, literally “lion of the bean”), Classical Syriac ܐܪܝܐ (ʾaryā, “lion”) being fitter for transferred use and also encountered in other plant names.

   Synonyms: جَعْفِيل (jaʕfīl), هَالُوك (hālūk), خَانِق الْكَرْسَنَّة (ḵāniq al-karsanna)

   • a. 1248, ابن البيطار [Ibn al-Bayṭār], الجامع لمفردات الأدوية والأغذية [De simplicibus medicinis opus magnum]:

     أسد العدس: هو الجعفيل وباليونانية أوروبنخي، وسنذكره فيما بعد وسمي بذلك لأنه إذا ثبت بين العدس أهلكه كله.

     Broomrape: It is جَعْفِيل (jaʕfīl, “broomrape”) and in Greek ὀροβάγχη (orobánkhē); we will mention it later. It is called so because when it becomes established among lentils it destroys them entirely.
