[edit]From Middle Persian 𐭠𐭯𐭥𐭩𐭭 (āfrīn, “praise, blessing”), from Proto-Iranian *ā- + *fraiH- (“to rejoice, atone, please”). The former prefix is from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éd (“to, at”), and the latter component is from Proto-Indo-European *preyH- (“to please; to love”).
