[edit]From Middle High German stœʒel, from Old High German stōʒil, from Proto-West Germanic *stautil (compare Middle Low German stȫtele), from Proto-Germanic *stautaną + *-ilaz. Equivalent to שטויסן (shtoysn) + ־ל (-l). Compare German Stößel.
