Probably borrowed from dialectal Polish chorchać (to cough up, to spit) +‎ ־לען (-len), semantically reinforced by charczeć and charkać. Compare Belarusian хо́ркаць (xórkacʹ), Russian хо́ркать (xórkatʹ), Ukrainian хо́ркати (xórkaty).
