Yiddish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Belarusian ржаве́ць (ržavjécʹ), Russian ржаве́ть (ržavétʹ), Ukrainian ржаві́ти (ržavíty), with dropping of initial consonant, although formation of ־ר־ (-r-) uncertain. By surface analysis, זשאַווער (zhaver) + ־ן (-n). (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “could "r" come from some sort of metathesis?”)
