From Middle High German gæhe, from Old High German gāhi, from Proto-Germanic *ganhuz. Compare German jäh (abrupt), Jähe (abruptness). Also cognate with Bavarian gach (sudden, abrupt), Dutch gauw (soon) and probably English gay, jay.
