[edit]From בַּר (bar, “of the age of”, literally “son of”) and מצווה / מִצְוָה (mitzvá, “mitzvah, commandment”); hence literally “of the age of commandment”. Originally designated the man of age, then the ceremony marking that age, then the teen having said ceremony.
