[edit]From בֵּית (bet, “house of”) + מַעֲכָה (ma'achah, “depression, oppression”), מַעֲכָה being from the root מ־ע־ך (m-'-k), a root meaning to press, squeeze, or crush. Related to the Hebrew מָעַךְ (ma'ach, “to crush”).
