From בֵּית (bet, house of) +‎ מַעֲכָה (ma'achah, depression, oppression), מַעֲכָה being from the root מ־ע־ך (m-'-k), a root meaning to press, squeeze, or crush. Related to the Hebrew מָעַךְ (ma'ach, to crush).
