Possibly from the root א־ל־ם, and if so comparable to Arabic أَلَم (ʔalam, “pain, ache”). But compare also Aramaic אַרְמַלְתָּא (ʾarmaltā) and Arabic أَرْمَلَة (ʔarmala). One of the two consonantisms is likely due to assimilation and dissimilation processes.
