Appearance
Yiddish
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]Adjective
[edit]אוקראַיִנישע • (ukrainishe)
- inflection of אוקראַיִניש (ukrainish):
Etymology 2
[edit]Ellipsis of אוקראַיִנישע ייִדישקע (ukrainishe yidishke) or אוקראַיִנישע ייִד f (ukrainishe yid), by analogy with אוקראַיִנישער (ukrainisher).
Noun
[edit]אוקראַיִנישע • (ukrainishe) f, plural אוקראַיִנישע (ukrainishe)
Usage notes
[edit]- Yiddish rigorously distinguishes between Jews and non-Jews in national terminology. A Ukrainian non-Jewish woman is not an ukrainishe, but rather an אוקראַיִנערין (ukrainerin) or אוקראַיִנערקע (ukrainerke).
- This noun declines in much the same way as the adjective אוקראַיִניש (ukrainish), but without the separate predicate form. For example, the dative singular is אוקראַיִנישער (ukrainisher).
