Etymology
[edit]The etymology remains uncertain.
Since long connected with the descendants of Proto-Indo-European *péth₂r̥ (“wing; feather”), but Armenian is usually not considered to be inherited from the latter because of phonological problems (e.g. Proto-Indo-European *pe- would yield Old Armenian հե- (he-)). Ačaṙyan and J̌ahukyan imply, that we may be dealing with an early borrowing from some descendant of that Proto-Indo-European root, Ačaṙyan pointing specifically to Hittite 𒁁𒋻 n (pattar, “wing”), which should perhaps be read as pettar.
On the other hand, Martirosyan and Simon are more positive about the inheritance, Martirosyan reconstructing a nominative singular auslaut *-ōr with a question mark.
In Middle Armenian and dialects the form թեպուր (tʻepur) is also attested.
