An Iranian borrowing; compare Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (twhtn', twc- /⁠tōxtan, tōz-⁠/, to atone, expiate), Persian توختن (tuxtan, to pay a debt). Doublet of տուգան (tugan).
