[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Arabic دَوَالِي (dawālī), plural construct state of دَالِيَة (dāliya, “vine; varix”) or from its Classical Syriac cognate ܕܠܝ (dālī, “vine; varicose vein”). Compare also Old Armenian դոյլ (doyl, “pail, bucket”), which ultimately may be from the same Semitic root.
Has also been compared to Udi тӏул (ṭul, “grape”), Urartian 𒄑𒌌𒁲 (GIŠ.ul-di /uldi, ulde, uduli/, “vineyard”), Akkadian 𒄑𒆜𒆳 (/tillatu/, “vine”).
