Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *ḱeygʰ- (“to jump; lively, brisk”). Cognates include Sanskrit शीघ्र (śīghrá-, “quick, speedy”), Russian сигать (sigatʹ, “to jump”) and Old English hīgian (“to strive, hasten”) (English hie). The original meaning of Armenian must have been “walking proudly” as shown by սիգամ (sigam, “to strut”), սիգաքայլ (sigakʻayl, “walking or curveting proudly”), etc.
