Old Armenian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Middle Iranian *sapōδ (perhaps via Aramaic, because otherwise *սապոյր (*sapoyr) is expected[1]), from Old Iranian *sapauda-, whence Classical Persian سبوی (sabōy), سبو (sabô, “cup, jug”), Bactrian σαβολο (sabolo, “jar”) and the Tocharian B loanword sapule (“jar”).[2][3][4] The connection with Persian was recognised already by Awgerean and Gēorg Dpir.[5][6]
