[edit]Etymology
[edit]The origin is uncertain. Has been compared to Proto-Slavic *bedro (“thigh”) and derived from Proto-Indo-European *bod-ro-, from *bed- (“to swell (?)”), but the meanings do not match.[1][2][3][4]
Probably connected with Aramaic פרת (prt), פרתא (prtʾ, “navel”),[5] which is possibly from the root פ־ר־ת (p-r-t, “to pierce; to split”).[6]
