The origin is uncertain.[1]

According to J̌ahukyan, perhaps a dialectal form of փայլ (pʻayl).[2]

Related to Northern Kurdish p’el, pel, pol (firebrand, smouldering piece of wood, charred wood, live coal; ember), Central Kurdish پۆل (pol), پۆلوو (polû, ember), Kermanic [script needed] (polozm, firebrand).

The compound կայծապող (kaycapoł) is attested in the Old Armenian text Varkʻ Aberkiosi episkoposi of unknown date, corresponding to Ancient Greek σπινθήρ (spinthḗr, spark).
