Old Armenian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Certainly an Iranian borrowing, but the details are unclear.

Ačaṙyan remarks that Middle Persian [script needed] (ptwnd /patvand, paywand/, connection, relationship) fits in form but not meaning. J̌ahukyan is more positive, adducing also Persian پابند (pâband, fetter), پای‌بست (pây-bast, foundation). Compare also Pazend Middle Persian 𐬞𐬀𐬉𐬬𐬀𐬧𐬛 (paēvaṇd), Manichaean Middle Persian 𐫛𐫏𐫇𐫗 (pywn /paywann, paywenn/, connection, tie), Khotanese [script needed] (pabana-, continuum, connexion). All of these ultimately go back to Proto-Iranian *pati- (against, toward) + *band- (to bind).
