Etymology
[edit]The older form is որջիլ (orǰil), of uncertain origin.[1][2] Since Bugge the term has often been connected with Sanskrit रिक्षा (rikṣā), लिक्षा (likṣā, “nit, young louse”), Persian رشک (rešk, “nit”), Latin ricinus (“tick”), Lithuanian érkė (“tick, mite”), Latvian ērce (“tick, mite”) and especially Albanian ergjëz (“nit”), and derived from Proto-Indo-European,[3][4][5] but there are phonological problems.
