[edit]From Middle Iranian *ništra-, formed with a base ultimately going back to Proto-Indo-Iranian *náyȷ́žʰam and the tool-suffix *-tra-. See Persian نیشتر (ništar) for more. Doublet of Middle Armenian նշտար (nštar).

Usage notes
[edit]Attested only in instrumental singular նշտրով (nštrov), from which all dictionaries back-form a nominative *նշտիր (*nštir). However, based on the etymology the correct nominative is *նիշտր (*ništr).
