[edit]- նախապետ (naxapet)
Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from a Middle Iranian compound meaning "family-head", whose first component is the Iranian word for "navel", figuratively also meaning "family" (compare Persian ناف (nâf, “navel”), Avestan 𐬥𐬁𐬟𐬀 (nāfa, “navel”), 𐬥𐬁𐬟𐬋 (nāfō, “relatives, family”)), and the second is the etymon of պետ (pet, “chief, head”).
The form նախապետ (naxapet) is either because of reanalysis within Armenian as նախ (nax, “first”) + -ա- (-a-) + պետ (pet) or is wholly borrowed from a parallel Iranian formation containing the etymon of նախ (nax, “first”) and meaning "lord of the first".
The compound is attested as Middle Persian 𐭭𐭧𐭥𐭯𐭲𐭩 (nḥwpty), a title appearing in the Paikuli inscription, and as Gandhari [Kharoshthi needed] (ṇavhapati), a title appearing in the Reliquary Inscription of Senavaṃma.
