Old Armenian

[edit]

Etymology 1

[edit]

From *յագ- (*yag-), of uncertain origin, +‎ -չ- (-čʻ-). Ačaṙyan rejects the attempts of connecting the word with յանկչիմ (yankčʻim), յանգչիմ (yangčʻim), հանգչիմ (hangčʻim) and leaves the origin open. According to J̌ahukyan, a relation with հագնեմ (hagnem, to patch, to piece together; to join) is possible, with the usual h/y alternation.
