Old Armenian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Usually derived from Proto-Indo-European *muHtro-, from *mewH- (“to make wet, wash”) with Sanskrit मूत्र (mūtra, “urine”), Avestan 𐬨𐬏𐬚𐬭𐬀 (mūθra, “excrement, filth”), Middle Low German modder (“silt”), Proto-Balto-Slavic *mauˀras (“mud”), Old Armenian մօր (mōr, “swamp, marsh”), etc. as cognates. But Martirosyan connects մուր (mur, “soot”), մօր (mōr, “swamp, marsh”) and Proto-Balto-Slavic *mauˀras (“mud”) and prefers a European substrate origin for them, comparing especially Czech mour (“coal dust, soot”).
