Etymology

An Iranian borrowing. Compare Parthian 𐫖𐫀𐫡𐫏𐫃𐫡 (mʾrygr /⁠mārigar⁠/, sorcerer, incantator), 𐫖𐫍𐫡𐫏𐫃𐫡 (mhrygr /⁠mahrīgar⁠/, sorcerer) and especially Sogdian [script needed] (mʾrkrʾy, soothsayer), [script needed] (mʾrkrʾk /⁠mārkarē(k)⁠/, soothsayer). Aghwan 𐕌𐔰𐕙𐕘𐔰𐕛𐔴𐕎 (marġaven) is also from Iranian.
