Etymology
[edit]From Old Armenian *հօտաղ (*hōtał), from հօտ (hōt, “flock”) with an unknown element *աղ (*ał) which may be the suffix -աղ (-ał). Martirosyan explains *աղ (*ał) from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂-lo-, from *peh₂- (“to protect; to shepherd”).
