Etymology

[edit]

The origin is uncertain. Ačaṙyan leaves the origin of the word open. According to J̌ahukyan, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *seǵʰ- (to hold, possess; to overcome somebody), with Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬰- (haz-, to seize, to acquire) as a cognate, which he mistakenly glosses as “overcoming oneself, controlling oneself”. For this etymon see Pokorny, without the Armenian.
