[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *ǵoy-ǵar-n-, reduplication of *ǵār- (“voice, exclamation”). Cognate with Ossetian зар (zar, “song”), Ancient Greek γῆρυς (gêrus, “voice”), Latin garrio (“to chatter”), Old English caru (English care).
