Etymology

Of Hurro-Urartian origin. Compare Hurrian 𒊍𒋛𒊑 (as-si-ri /⁠assiri, (pl: sarre)⁠/, live booty, captive), itself from Akkadian 𒇽𒀀𒋛𒊒 (LU2a-si-ru /⁠asīru⁠/, captive, prisoner of war, one who is taken in bonds; foreign worker), from Proto-Semitic *ʔasīr- (captive).
