Etymology

[edit]

Learned borrowing from Old Armenian թիւնոս (tʻiwnos). In the form թյուննոս (tʻyunnos) the second -ն- (-n-) has been learnedly restored to conform to the more common Ancient Greek θύννος (thúnnos).

Pronunciation

[edit]

Noun

[edit]

թյունոս (tʻyunos) (traditional orthography spelling թիւնոս)

  1. tuna (fish)
Synonyms: թունա (tʻuna), տունեց (tunecʻ), թոն (tʻon)

Usage notes

[edit]

Armenian dictionaries treat թյուն(ն)ոս (tʻyun(n)os) as the standard word for tuna. In practice, it has been displaced by թունա (tʻuna).
