Etymology
[edit]The original spelling is թեղաւշ (tʻeławš), perhaps from earlier *թեղամշ (*tʻełamš) (compare dialectal թէղմըշի (tʻēġməši)); for մ (m) → ւ (w) compare պաշտօն (paštōn)). The origin is uncertain. Closely related to Georgian თელამუში (telamuši) and probably to Old Armenian թեղի (tʻełi).

- Եւ տո՛ւր բերել ինձ փայտս մայրս, եւ սարոյս, եւ թեղաւշս ի Լիբանանէ․ վասն զի ես գիտեմ, իբրեւ զծառայս քո ո՛չ ոք գիտէ հատանել փայտ ի Լիբանանէ։
- Ew túr berel inj pʻayts mayrs, ew saroys, ew tʻeławšs i Libananē; vasn zi es gitem, ibrew zcaṙays kʻo óčʻ okʻ gitē hatanel pʻayt i Libananē.

Usage notes
[edit]- Has been alternatively identified with the holm oak, cedar and pine.
- In an enumeration of tree names in Isaiah 44:14, corresponds to Old Georgian თელაჲ (telay, “elm”).
