Old Armenian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Uncertain. Ačaṙean and Olsen leave the origin open.
J̌ahukyan derives from Proto-Indo-European *teh₂g-t-, enlarged from the root *teh₂g- (“to touch”), whence Latin tangō (“to touch”) and tālus (“ankle; heel”), etc. (see also թակարդ (tʻakard)). Alternatively, according to him we may be dealing with a Lallwort with parallels in Indo-European and non-Indo-European languages; compare German Tatze and Romanian talpă with their many relations.
