An Iranian borrowing: compare Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (glwb' /⁠graw⁠/, pledge, security), Classical Persian گرو (giraw, wager, stake, bet; pledge, pawn, deposit, earnest; contract). Georgian გირაო (girao, pledge) is from the same source.
