[edit]From Middle Iranian *gāwāzan (“spiked stick used for driving oxen”). Compare Classical Persian گوازه (gawāza), گاوزنه (gâwzana), Avestan 𐬔𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬁𐬰𐬀 (gauuāza, “ox-goad”). See the Persian for more.
