From Middle Iranian *gāwāzan (spiked stick used for driving oxen). Compare Classical Persian گوازه (gawāza), گاوزنه (gâwzana), Avestan 𐬔𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬁𐬰𐬀 (gauuāza, ox-goad). See the Persian for more.
