Etymology

From Arabic عُصْفُر (ʕuṣfur). The forms with an մ- (m-) are from the related مُعَصْفَر (muʕaṣfar, safflower).

Ačaṙyan records the given names Մասպուռ (Maspuṙ) [1628] and Մասփուր (Maspʻur) [1629] as alternative forms of Մասուր (Masur, literally rosehip),[1] but they are rather derived from this safflower word.

      قُرْطُم (qurṭum) = seed of safflower
    • 9th or 10th century, with changes and additions in later centuries, Tʻargmanutʻiwn dełocʻ zor əntrel en imastasērkʻn ew kargeal yayl lezuacʻ [A Medieval Arabic–Armenian Botanical Dictionary] :[3]
      Ալոփալջիլ (var. ալոփալջրիկ) = մասփուրի հունդ։
      Alopʻalǰil (var. alopʻalǰrik) = maspʻuri hund.
      الْعُصْفُر (al-ʕuṣfur) = seed of safflower
