Etymology

Learned borrowing from Old Armenian ասուպ (asup), found only in HHB citing Albertus Magnus, several medieval Armenian translations of whom are known. Borrowed from Medieval Latin asub (“meteor”) attested in the writings of Albertus Magnus, which the Armenian translator simply transliterated. Asub, assub is a Latinized form of Arabic أَشْهُب (ʔašhub), plural of شِهَاب (šihāb, “meteor”).

Note also Middle Armenian ասպ (asp, “comet”) in Mxitʻar Ayrivanecʻi.
