Armenian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Learned borrowing from Old Armenian ասուպ (asup), found only in HHB citing Albertus Magnus,[1] several medieval Armenian translations of whom are known. Borrowed from Medieval Latin asub (“meteor”) attested in the writings of Albertus Magnus, which the Armenian translator simply transliterated. Asub, assub is a Latinized form of Arabic أَشْهُب (ʔašhub), plural of شِهَاب (šihāb, “meteor”).
Note also Middle Armenian ասպ (asp, “comet”) in Mxitʻar Ayrivanecʻi.[2]
