Etymology
[edit]A Semitic loan: compare Akkadian 𒁰𒈦𒆕 (/nayyalu, nayālu, nālu/, “roe deer”), secondarily derived from 𒁰𒈦 (ayyalu, ayālu) of the same meaning, descended from Proto-Semitic *ʔayyal- (“stag”), with the abstract marker 𒌓 (/ūt/).[1] A contamination with Hurrian [script needed] (na-a-li /nāli/, “deer”) might be the cause of the intrusive nasal initial found both in Akkadian and Armenian.[2]

Usage notes
[edit]The meaning “giraffe”, which has been assumed on the basis of a Biblical attestation, has been misconstrued.
