[edit]- Տարսաիճ (Tarsaič)
Etymology
[edit]Likely borrowed from an unidentified Iranian name containing a reflex of Proto-Iranian *tr̥šáti (“to tremble with fear”) and the Iranian hypocoristic suffix -ič. Compare especially Parthian 𐫤𐫡𐫘 𐫏𐫉𐫅𐫀𐫗 (trs yzdʾn /Tars-yazdān/, “a male given name”, literally “fearing god”), Classical Syriac ܡܝܗܪܛܪܣ (myhrṭrs /Mihr-Tars/, “a male given name from Iranian”, literally “full of respect for Mithra”), and Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (tlsʾk' /tarsāg/, “Christian”, literally “(God) fearer”) (Persian ترسا (tarsâ)).
