From a European language. Compare New Latin Japonia, French Japon, Italian Giappone, Portuguese Japão, obsolete English Japonia, Romanian Japonia. Transliterated into Armenian following Western Armenian pronunciation of the letter ճ (č), which is [d͡ʒ], as in Ճավա (Čava), Ճամայկա (Čamayka), Ճենովա (Čenova), ճիզվիտ (čizvit).
