Etymology

[edit]
PIE word
*h₁éḱwos

Borne by Armenian persons in the 4th and 5th centuries AD.

Certainly an Iranian name with a Grecized ending -էս (-ēs), but the details remain unclear.

Justi connects with Old Persian 𐎠𐎿𐎲𐎠𐎼 (a-s-b-a-r /asabāra-/), Middle Persian ʾswbʾl (aswār, horseman). This is not accepted by Ačaṙyan, who leaves the origin open.

Abaev and Nalbandjan derive by metathesis from Alanic *Æsfӕruk (see Proto-Sarmatian *Asφaurūk).

Related to Inscriptional Parthian 𐭀𐭎𐭐𐭅𐭓𐭊 (ʾspwrk /Aspōrak/).

Compare also the name Ասպրակոս (Asprakos).
