Etymology

From *qoñ(ğu)rağu (bell) (compare Karakhanid [script needed] (qoñrağu, bell), the action noun from the verb *qoñ(ğu)ra- "to ring a bell", from Proto-Turkic *koñra- (to ring, toll). Cognate with Bashkir ҡыңғырау (qıñğıraw), Kyrgyz коңгуроо (koŋguroo), Southern Altai коҥыра (koŋïra), коҥору (koŋoru), Uzbek qo'ng'iroq, Uyghur قوڭغۇراق (qongghuraq), Khakas хонъро (xonʺro), etc.
