[edit]From Proto-Turkic *koñra- (“to ring, toll”).
Cognate with Kazakh қоңырау (qoñyrau, “bell”), Kyrgyz коңгуроо (koŋguroo, “bell”),Tatar qıñıraw, Kumyk къонгурав (qoñuraw), Uzbek qo'ng'iroq (“bell; telephone call”), Uyghur قوڭغۇراق (qongghuraq, “bell; ring”), Khakas хонъро (xonʺro, “cowbell”), Tuvan коңга (koñga), Western Yugur qoŋïraq, etc.
