From Proto-Turkic *koñra- (to ring, toll).

Cognate with Kazakh қоңырау (qoñyrau, bell), Kyrgyz коңгуроо (koŋguroo, bell),Tatar qıñıraw, Kumyk къонгурав (qoñuraw), Uzbek qo'ng'iroq (bell; telephone call), Uyghur قوڭغۇراق (qongghuraq, bell; ring), Khakas хонъро (xonʺro, cowbell), Tuvan коңга (koñga), Western Yugur qoŋïraq, etc.
